Saginaw – City

Tom Darnell, Public Services Director  759-1696

http://www.saginaw-mi.com/

General Collection Guidelines

All materials must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your designated collection day.   Materials not at the curb when collection vehicles pass, will not be picked up that week.  Residents should place trash and yard waste on one side of their driveway and recyclables on the other side so that collection crews can properly identify and pick up materials efficiently.

Trash, recycling and yard waste will not be collected on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.  Holidays that fall on a weekday cause a one-day delay for that day and each regular service day thereafter in the week of the holiday.  If a holiday falls on a weekend, no delay in service will occur.

Trash Collection Services

Trash collection occurs Monday through Friday in the City of Saginaw.  Please contact the city office for your exact collection day.  Residents may set out up to 20 bags or cans of household trash and 2 bulky items each week.  All trash must be securely contained in bags or trashcans no larger than 33-gallons.  Each bag or trashcan must weigh less than 50 pounds.

Bulky Items: Any item that exceeds 50 pounds or does not fit into a standard 33-gallon bag or trashcan is considered a bulky item.  Examples include furniture, mattresses and appliances.

Carpet: Carpet must be cut into 4-foot wide pieces and tied into rolls.  Each roll must not weigh more than 50 pounds.

Commercial Garbage Hauling: Items such as auto parts, intact garage doors, landscape timbers, building materials, assembled swing sets and picnic tables are NOT included in the regular curbside trash collection program.  Contact a commercial garbage hauler for removal, listed under “Rubbish” in the yellow pages of your phone directory.

Waste Collection Convenience Station - The Right of Way Street Division will be offering City Residents the opportunity to dispose of items that would have to be taken to the landfill (i.e. building materials, etc) that curbside pick up does not pick up. No liquids or Hazardous Materials. Recycling for glass, Plastic and paper will also be available. This program will be offered the second Saturday of every month from 10am until 2pm at the Public Works building on Washington.

Westside Residents – Place your brush at the curb on the evening of the last day of the month.  City personnel will pickup between the 1st and the 15th

Eastside Residents – Place your brush at the curb on the evening of the 15th of the month.  City personnel will pickup between the 16th and the last day of that month.

Yard waste is collected as stated above April through November in the City of Saginaw.

The city will pick up brush piles that are in compliance with the following rules:  All others will be left and a “Notice of Violation” will be posted.

2.      Brush pile shall be no larger than 4 feet high x 4 feet wide x 10 feet long

3.      Limb or branch shall be no greater than 6 inches in diameter

Root Balls and Stumps: Root balls and stumps are not accepted in yard waste or trash collections.  Contact a commercial landscape or tree removal service for disposal.

Christmas Trees: Christmas trees are collected the first three weeks in January for composting.  Remove all tinsel, ornaments, hooks, lights, ropes or plastic tree bags before putting tree at curbside.

Effective Wednesday, April 1, 2009, Mid Michigan Waste Authority (Waste Management) will begin picking up yard waste on your regular rubbish day.

Yard waste is defined as grass clippings, yard vegetation, sod without dirt, twigs (less then 2" in diameter), and leaves.  These items may be placed in a 33-gallon or smaller labeled trashcan or paper yard waste bag for collection.  Trashcans and paper yard waste bags need a "Yard Waste" sticker available from City Hall or the Public Services Department.  All cans and bags must be closed and weigh less than 50 pounds. Yard Waste mixed with trash or any illegal debris will be left and a “Notice of Violation” will be posted.  A “Notice of Violation” will be posted if any debris or yard waste is raked into the street.
